Imperial Bestiary & Creature Compendium
13 Documented SpeciesElder races, abyssal demons, shapeshifting D’ivers, and primordial war beasts across the Malazan continents.

Aptorian Demon
Native horrors of an elder warren aligned with Shadow, Aptorian demons possess skin like polished obsidian, multi-jointed scythe-arms, and sensory organs tuned to magical turbulence and life scent. Despite their horrifying visage, the Aptorian summoned by Kalam Mekhar forged an empathic, protective bond with child refugees across Seven Cities.

K'Chain Che'Malle (Kell Hunter)
The K'Chain Che'Malle were the dominant civilization of the world before the rise of the T'lan Imass. Giant, bipedal saurian carnivores organized in hive casts, their warrior caste—the Kell Hunters—have forged long steel swords grafted directly to their forearms and run faster than cavalry.

Hound of Shadow (Deragoth Offshoot)
Enormous, horse-sized lupine predators with coats of roiling ink and eyes of amber flame. Bound directly to Shadowthrone and Cotillion, the seven Hounds—Blind, Gear, Shan, Doan, Baran, Rood, and Pallid—patrol the paths of Shadow and tear mortal flesh to shreds in seconds.

Eleint (Pureblood Dragons)
The pureblood dragons of Starvald Demelain, such as Silanah and Tiam, represent the untamed primordial chaos of existence. Their presence warps sorcery for leagues around, and their breath can incinerate legions and dissolve magical wards.

Ryllandaras (White Jackal / Ay D'ivers)
A legendary shapeshifting entity capable of dividing its singular consciousness into hundreds of ravenous, white-furred jackals. Imprisoned in an Otataral prison within the Drynawood for centuries, Ryllandaras broke free during the Whirlwind rebellion.

Quorl
Enormous, four-winged dragonfly-like insects bred and ridden by the masked Moranth of Cloud Forest. Quorls provide the Malazan Empire with devastating aerial reconnaissance, heavy logistics, and explosive munition bombing runs.

Bhederin
Towering herd animals resembling massive, woolly bison or longhorn oxen. Central to the survival of nomadic human tribes such as the Rhivi and Wickans, bhederin herds number in the tens of thousands across northern Genabackis and Seven Cities.

The Ay (Ancestral Great Wolves)
The colossal prehistoric wolves that accompanied the mortal Imass before the Ritual of Tellann. With massive jaws capable of snapping mammoth bones and senses tied directly to the earth spirits, their fossilized remains still stir when elder warrens are tapped.

Gryllen (D'ivers Rat Swarm)
A horrifying D'ivers mage who transforms into millions of diseased, red-eyed wharf rats. Ravenous, cunning, and completely devoid of empathy, Gryllen entered the Path of Hands in Seven Cities with the ambition of claiming the vacant Beast Throne.

Gryn (Sand Darter / Desert Wyrm)
Subterranean ambush predators native to the red dunes of Seven Cities. Gryn swim through loose sand as if it were water, sensing surface footsteps from miles away to drag camels and lone wanderers beneath the earth.

Great Raven
Gargantuan corvids possessing human intellect and speech, born from the flesh of the Crippled God when he was pulled down from the sky. They nest on the flying fortress of Moon's Spawn and serve Crone, the ancient matriarch raven.

Rhivi Giant Condor
Majestic avian apex predators soaring the thermals above the Genabackis mountain spines. Revered as ancestral psychopomps by the Rhivi plains shamans, they escort fallen warriors to the spirit world.

Trolbarahl
A terrifying predatory nether-demon summoned through forbidden rites of blood. Possessing nightmarish agility, bat-like wings, and hollow needle-talons that drain a victim's blood and memories in moments.
